They sound alike and share the same heart: comfort and quality of life. But they are not the same, and knowing the difference can help your family make clearer choices. Here is a plain-language guide for families in Henderson and Las Vegas.

Last updated: October 26, 2026.

What Is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is care that focuses on improving quality of life for people with a serious illness and for the people caring for them. It is available to people of any age, not just older adults.

The goal is to ease symptoms such as pain, trouble breathing or nausea, and to make sure care is well coordinated.

One key point: palliative care can start as early as the day of diagnosis, and it can be given at the same time as treatment meant to cure or control the illness. It may be offered in a hospital, a nursing home, an outpatient clinic or at home.

What Is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is a special kind of palliative care for the final weeks or months of life. It is meant for a time when a person and their family decide to focus on comfort instead of treatments to cure or slow the illness.

Hospice is for someone whose doctor believes they have six months or less to live if the illness follows its usual course. Hospice care does not have to end at six months: it can continue as long as the hospice doctor recertifies that the person is still eligible.

Choosing hospice does not mean stopping all care. People in hospice still receive medicines to manage pain and other symptoms, and Original Medicare still pays for covered care for health problems that are not related to the terminal illness. A person can also stop hospice at any time and return later if they are still eligible.

Hospice brings together a team that can include nurses, doctors, social workers, spiritual advisors and trained volunteers. The team also coaches family caregivers and can arrange respite care when a caregiver needs a break.

Hospice care follows a written plan of care, and medicines and medical equipment are ordered by your loved one’s doctor or the hospice’s doctors or nurse practitioners.

The Main Differences at a Glance

Palliative care

Hospice care

When it starts

Any time after a serious diagnosis

When a doctor believes life expectancy is six months or less

Treatment for the illness

Can continue alongside palliative care

Under Medicare hospice, treatment meant to cure the terminal illness stops; comfort care and symptom medicines continue

Where

Hospital, clinic, nursing home or home

Usually at home; also nursing homes, hospitals or hospice facilities

Payment

Depends on the person’s benefits and insurance plan

Covered by Medicare Part A for people who qualify

One exception: children under 21 who have Medicaid or CHIP can receive hospice care and treatment to cure their illness at the same time.

How Medicare Covers Hospice

Medicare Part A covers hospice care for people who qualify (see our guide to hospice costs and Medicare coverage in Nevada). To start hospice, the hospice doctor and the person’s regular doctor (if they have one) certify a life expectancy of six months or less. The person accepts comfort care instead of care to cure the terminal illness and related conditions, and signs a statement choosing hospice. After the first 90-day benefit period, the hospice medical director or another hospice doctor recertifies eligibility at the start of each new period.

When care comes from a Medicare-approved hospice, there is nothing to pay for hospice care itself. There may be a copay of up to $5 for each prescription for pain and symptom relief, and up to 5% of the Medicare-approved amount for inpatient respite care. Medicare does not cover room and board at home or in a nursing home, except for short inpatient or respite stays the hospice arranges. A respite stay can last up to 5 days at a time and can be used more than once, on an occasional basis.

Hospice can continue over time: Medicare offers two 90-day benefit periods, followed by an unlimited number of 60-day periods, as long as the hospice doctor recertifies eligibility.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, Original Medicare covers hospice care for the terminal illness, and you can keep your plan for other covered services. You can also change your hospice provider once during each benefit period.

Hospice Through Nevada Medicaid

Nevada Medicaid also covers hospice for eligible members, with approval (prior authorization) that the hospice requests from Nevada Medicaid.

Not sure if your loved one qualifies? Call us to talk it through, with no pressure: 1-702-790-1341.

Where Quality of Life Hospice Fits In

Quality of Life Hospice provides hospice-level care for families in Las Vegas, Henderson and the surrounding area, including in-home hospice care for Henderson families. Palliative care can start at diagnosis and be given alongside treatment. Hospice is for the final months of life, when the focus moves fully to comfort.

Can my loved one keep getting treatment during palliative care? What about hospice?

Yes, palliative care can be given alongside treatment meant to cure or control the illness. Under Medicare hospice, treatment meant to cure the terminal illness stops, but medicines for pain and symptoms continue, and care for unrelated health problems is still covered. Children under 21 with Medicaid or CHIP can receive both hospice and curative treatment.

How do we know when it is time to move from palliative care to hospice?

If treatment is no longer helping, the doctor may suggest hospice when they believe life expectancy is six months or less. Talk openly with your loved one’s doctor about goals of care.

Does Medicare pay for palliative care and hospice care?

Medicare Part A covers hospice for people who qualify, with small possible copays for prescriptions and inpatient respite care. Coverage for palliative care depends on the person’s benefits and plan.

Does choosing hospice mean giving up?

No. Hospice means choosing to focus on comfort and support. Your loved one still receives care for pain and symptoms, your family receives support too, and your loved one can stop hospice at any time and return later if still eligible.

Does Quality of Life Hospice provide palliative care?

We provide hospice-level care. For standalone palliative care during treatment, ask your physician or health plan about a referral.

Who do we talk to first?

Start with your loved one’s doctor.
